The latest screenplay is going really, really well, and I'm enjoying every minute of writing it. I mentioned earlier that it's about censorship, and that's really all I want to say at the moment. I've done a lot of research for it and have used both the Columbia University and New York Public Libraries for items I never thought they'd have. And the writing is going pretty smoothly.
What frightens me is that I'm on page 75, and I'm not even halfway through my outline. For those unfamiliar with screenplay basics, the standard screenplay length is 120 pages, and the halfway mark should more or less occur around page 60 - meaning I've got some editing to do. Regardless, this is my first attempt at a fairly serious screenplay, as well as a character portrait, and I think it's going nicely. I honestly think it could be the next big thing, a sort-of American Splendor on steroids. More later!

| Project Greenlight Loser |
[13 May 2004|01:51am] |
To those who were wondering, I just found out that I have not been selected as one of the top ten finalists for this year's Project Greenlight. I also found out that they're biased against young filmmakers...or good filmmakers! Haha, sounds so bitter, right?
Please, go check out their top ten finalists here: Click me.
Start with the female director. I defy you to tell me this is a "good" film in any sense. Now work your way down and see if you can sit through any of the ten without losing interest.
Now go check out the top 50 here: Click me. My entry is under Bizdog, but try watching something randomly. I recommend CaptainHappy's entry. It is the first I randomly clicked on, and it is freakin' brilliant. I mean, it is simply amazingly crafted. Dorky, but in that good filmic kind of way. In the sense that, if you had this guy on your project, you'd probably not have much conflict save for novice filmmaker screw-ups.
I have no idea what they're exactly looking for. I feel my film has too much talking, and the premise was done by a few people, meaning we were all in competition (I'd like to point out that one of the top-10'ers cheated by having someone else stand in for him in the film).
My point is simply that they were looking for more than good directors. They were looking for interesting people, to make an interesting show. This isn't bad in itself, and I totally understand. But all along, I've been trying to figure out - are they looking for a director? Or a contest winner? And it appears they're looking for a contest winner.
I have no problem with losing. But when I lose, I like to watch the films that won and say to myself, "Damn that was fierce competition," as I did with the Coke contest. This is more like they were looking for a person that fit some list of qualities. I could be completely wrong. Maybe I've lost all ability to judge my work in relation to others. But I gotta say - CaptainHappy, or numerous other Top 50 directors really deserved to be on there if it was solely based on 1) our filmmaking abilities, and 2) our passions as filmmakers.
Oh well. Still in the screenplay contest. More on that in 20 days or so!

Top 50 Director Contestant,
On May 12th the judging panel will be convening to determine the Top 10 Directors for this year's contest. The meeting will take place in the afternoon and will last until the Top 10 are determined. We will call the Top 10 to notify them of their advancement, but will likely not be able to contact the 40 contestants who did not advance due to time limitations. We will post the information to the site as quickly as possible after the Top 10 calls have been made.
Thank you and good luck.

| PGL Screenwriter Video finished |
[07 May 2004|02:30am] |
After much work, my screenwriter video for the Project Greenlight competition is finished. I'll hear back June 1 about whether I'm in the top 5. I'm really happy with it, and New York never looked so good! Countdowns have been added to the Current Projects bar to keep everyone updated.
Assuming I wake up in time to overnight it to them tomorrow. Which is actually really unlikely.
[EDIT] Screenwriter video successfully received by Miramax at 10:03 AM. Thanks, Fedex![/EDIT]

| Off to LA |
[06 May 2004|06:41pm] |
|
So as it turns out, Project Greenlight is going to fly all the Coca-Cola Filmmaker's Award finalists out to LA in July for a special dinner and some seminars. I've never been to LA, and I guess I'll be going alone here, as I didn't enter the contest with anyone. Should be an experience - though I hope at that point, I'm already there because I'm the winner of this year's project greenlight competition! Maybe someone cool will be at the dinner...

| Columbia University School of the Arts News |
[04 May 2004|04:57am] |
I realize it's quite after the fact, but I recently came across this on the Columbia film school website:
Fifty Percent of Coca Cola Finalists from Columbia Film School by Joshua Adler
Ten finalists were recently announced for the Coca Cola One-Minute Film Competition, and once again, Columbia's Film Students were more than well represented. Of the ten finalists, from the nation's best film schools, half were from Columbia University while the other five finalists were from USC, UCLA and NYU. The finalists from Columbia are Steve Sole and Brett Levner, Marshall Lewy and Suzy Yoonesi, Seth Michael Doasky and Ben Odell, Jim Pelligrini and Jonathan London, and undergraduate Nick Carr. The Coca Cola Refreshing Filmmaker competition is open to students from select film schools across the nation. Each finalist is given 5,000 dollars and 35 mm film to make a one-minute film over the Holiday Break. The winner's film will be screened in movie theaters before previews, across America and will also receive a 10,000 dollar grand prize. All of Columbia's finalists are currently in pre-production.

| Project Greenlight Round 3 |
[27 Apr 2004|10:36pm] |
Just found out tonight:

See list of winners here. That means that out of 1700 submissions, we're down to the top 50. And that means it's out of my hands from here on in. The top 10 entrants who will go on to the next round will be announced on May 12 by phone call.
Fingers crossed.
