BioThe Coca Cola Refreshing Filmmaker's Award is a contest that is open to select colleges and universities with film departments throughout the country (USC, NYU, UCLA, Columbia, etc.). The contest is to write a fifty-second screenplay about either a) the filmmaking experience or b) the film-going experience. The screenplay must be submitted to the contest with budget forms, a production plan, and storyboards that lay out your vision for the script.
After all the scripts have been turned in by mid-november, they select ten winners. Each winner is given a five thousand dollar production grant to make their film, with a February 1st deadline. The film is to be shot totally professionally, on 35mm film, etc. After all the films have been finished, they select a winner out of the ten. The director of this winning film receives a $10,000 award and will have his short film shown in 19,000 theaters across the country before major mainstream releases (mixed in with the movie trailers). For example, the winning film from two years ago was shown in EVERY theater across the country before the Matrix Revolutions - that's some pretty serious exposure!!
When I droppped my application off to the Columbia film department, I was told that I was the only undergrad applying this year. I only saw a stack of about twenty applications or so in the drop box, and asked if that was all the competition from Columbia. They told me that was all the competition received TODAY, and that there were stacks of entries back in the offices. Apparently, hundreds of film students enter in this every year. Needless to say, I was incredibly shocked when I got a winning phone call the night before Thanksgiving!
All I have been told thus far is that I'm one of the ten winners, that I will receive the five thousand dollar production grant soon, and that it has to be shot, edited, scored, and finalized by Feb. 1, which is an enormous amount of work. However, I am totally up to the challenge. I know the film frame by frame in my head, and cannot wait for my first chance to shoot on 35mm film.
